What Documents Do UK Delivery Riders Need?

Getting your documents right is one of the most important parts of any delivery application. Many delays happen not because someone is unsuitable, but because a document was unclear, out of date or the wrong type.

This checklist covers the documents that UK delivery platforms commonly ask for. Every platform is different, and requirements change. Always check the official website or app of the platform you are applying to for its current list.

The core documents platforms ask for

1. Proof of identity

Almost every platform needs to confirm who you are. Applicants are typically asked for a valid photo ID, such as:

  • A passport
  • A biometric residence document, where still accepted
  • A UK photocard driving licence, in some cases

Many platforms also ask you to take a selfie or a short video. The system compares your face to your ID photo. Make sure your face is clearly visible, without sunglasses, hats or strong shadows.

2. Proof of right to work in the UK

Platforms have to check that you are legally allowed to work in the UK. How you prove this depends on your situation:

  • British or Irish citizens usually show a passport or other accepted document.
  • People with a digital immigration status, such as an eVisa or settled status, usually provide a share code from the Home Office service.

A share code is time-limited. If it expires before the platform checks it, you will need to generate a new one. GOV.UK explains the process on its Prove your right to work (opens in a new tab) page.

Please be clear on this point: you must only use your own right-to-work evidence. Using someone else's documents, or borrowing an account that has passed checks, is against platform rules and may be a criminal offence. JZ Consultant Group will not help with this.

3. Driving licence (for motor vehicles)

If you will deliver by car, motorcycle, moped or scooter, you will usually need to provide a valid driving licence that covers that type of vehicle. Some platforms may also ask for a DVLA check code so they can view your licence record.

Check that:

  • The licence category matches your vehicle.
  • The address is current. You can update this with the DVLA.
  • The licence has not expired.

If you ride a moped or motorcycle, make sure you hold the right entitlement, which may include a CBT certificate where relevant.

4. Vehicle documents

For motor vehicles, platforms commonly ask for details such as:

  • The vehicle registration number
  • The V5C registration certificate (logbook)
  • A valid MOT certificate, if the vehicle is old enough to need one
  • Confirmation that vehicle tax is in place

Your name does not always need to be the registered keeper, but you may be asked to explain the arrangement. Check what the platform requires.

Insurance, bank and equipment

5. Insurance documents

If you use a motor vehicle, you will generally need insurance that covers food delivery, often called hire and reward or food delivery cover. Platforms may ask you to upload your certificate of motor insurance.

Look at the certificate carefully. It should show your name, the vehicle, the dates of cover, and wording that includes the type of use you need. For more on this topic, see understanding hire and reward insurance.

JZ Consultant Group is not an FCA-authorised insurance broker. We can explain general terms, but you must obtain cover from an FCA-authorised insurer or broker.

6. Bank account and contact details

Platforms usually pay into a UK bank account. Applicants are typically asked for an account in their own name. Using another person's bank account can cause payment problems and may raise questions during checks.

You will also need a working mobile number and email address. Use details you check regularly, because platforms send important messages this way.

7. Smartphone and equipment

A smartphone is not a document, but it is essential. Most platform apps need a fairly recent iPhone or Android phone, mobile data and good battery life. A phone mount and a power bank are useful for long shifts.

Tips for clear, accepted uploads

  1. Place the document on a flat, dark surface.
  2. Use natural light or a bright room, and avoid flash glare.
  3. Make sure all edges are in the photo.
  4. Do not edit, crop or add filters.
  5. Check that the text is sharp before uploading.
  6. Use the same name spelling across all documents and your account.

If something is rejected, read the reason carefully before you try again. Our guide to common food delivery application problems covers the most frequent issues.

Keep copies safe

Store your documents securely. Do not send copies of your passport or share codes to people you do not know, including people offering "fast approval" on social media. Only upload documents through the platform's official app or website.
