Deliveroo is one of the best-known food delivery apps in the UK. Riders deliver meals and shopping from restaurants and shops to customers' homes. Many people like the flexibility, but getting started can take some planning.
This article explains how the Deliveroo rider application usually works. It is general information, written at the time of publication. Deliveroo can change its process at any time, so always check the official Deliveroo rider website or app for the latest requirements.
What does a Deliveroo rider do?
Riders collect orders from restaurants or shops and deliver them to customers. You use the rider app to see offers, accept orders and follow directions.
Riders in the UK generally work as independent, self-employed contractors. This means:
- You choose when to log in and work.
- You are responsible for your own equipment and vehicle costs.
- You need to register with HMRC and pay your own tax and National Insurance where it is due.
If this is your first time being self-employed, read our guide to starting self-employed delivery work in the UK.
Choosing your vehicle
Deliveroo riders commonly use bicycles, e-bikes, mopeds, motorcycles or cars. Your choice affects what you will be asked for during the application.
- Bicycle: usually the simplest option. You do not need a driving licence or motor insurance for a normal pedal bike, but you still need to ride safely and follow the Highway Code.
- E-bike: an electrically assisted pedal cycle that meets the UK EAPC rules is generally treated like a bicycle in law. E-bikes that do not meet these rules may be treated as motor vehicles, which need registration, a licence and insurance.
- Moped, motorcycle or car: you will generally need a valid licence, the right vehicle documents, and insurance that covers food delivery.
Whatever you choose, think about the area you will work in, the distances involved, and the cost of running the vehicle.
The typical application process
At the time of writing, the application in the UK usually includes steps like these:
- Check availability in your area. Platforms sometimes open and close sign-ups by city or zone.
- Fill in the online form. You give your name, contact details, city and vehicle type.
- Verify your identity. Applicants are typically asked to upload ID and complete a photo or selfie check.
- Prove your right to work. This may involve a passport, or a share code if you have a digital immigration status.
- Upload vehicle documents if you use a motor vehicle, such as a driving licence and proof of insurance.
- Complete any onboarding. This may include online information about safety, food hygiene, and how the app works.
- Get your kit. Platforms may offer or require a thermal bag or other equipment. Check the current arrangements in the app.
Every application is reviewed by the platform. Approval is never guaranteed, and waiting times can vary.
Documents to get ready
Before you start, gather your documents in one place. Platforms commonly ask for:
- A valid passport or other accepted photo ID
- Proof of your right to work in the UK
- A UK bank account in your own name
- A driving licence and vehicle details, if you use a motor vehicle
- Proof of insurance that includes food delivery cover, if you use a motor vehicle
- A smartphone with enough storage and battery to run the app all shift

Common reasons for delays
Some of the most common problems we see are simple to avoid:
- Blurry or cropped photos of documents
- Names that do not match across documents and the account
- Expired ID or insurance documents
- Uploading the wrong type of document
- A share code that has expired before the platform checked it
If your application is stuck, our blog article on common food delivery application problems explains what to check.
Staying safe and following the rules
A few key points help you stay safe and keep your account in good standing:
- Wear suitable clothing and lights, especially at night.
- Keep your phone mounted safely, and do not handle it while moving.
- Follow road laws and the Highway Code at all times.
- Keep your insurance and documents up to date.
Most importantly, only use your own account and your own documents. Letting someone else work on your account, or using another person's account, breaks platform rules and may be illegal. JZ Consultant Group does not help with this in any way.
