Just Eat Courier Application Guide for the UK

Published · 6 min read

Just Eat is a large food ordering platform in the UK. Some restaurants use their own delivery staff, while other orders are delivered by couriers who work through Just Eat's courier programme. This guide focuses on the courier side.

Please note: the way Just Eat engages couriers has changed over the years, and it may be different in different cities. At the time of writing, couriers are commonly engaged on a self-employed basis, but always check the official Just Eat courier website or app for the current model and requirements in your area.

Understanding how Just Eat delivery works

When a customer orders through Just Eat, the food may be delivered in one of two ways:

  • By the restaurant's own staff. In this case the restaurant employs or engages its own drivers. Applying to deliver for that restaurant is a separate matter.
  • By a Just Eat courier. In this case the courier uses the Just Eat courier app to receive and complete orders.

If you want to deliver through the courier app, you apply to Just Eat's courier programme, not to individual restaurants.

Before you apply

Take a few minutes to think through the basics:

  • Right to work: you must have the legal right to work in the UK.
  • Vehicle: decide whether you will use a bicycle, e-bike, moped, motorcycle or car.
  • Area: check whether courier sign-ups are open in your town or city.
  • Equipment: you will need a reliable smartphone, a phone mount if you ride or drive, and suitable clothing.
  • Self-employment: if you will be self-employed, you will need to deal with your own tax registration and records.

Our blog article on starting self-employed delivery work in the UK covers the tax side in simple terms.

The usual application steps

At the time of writing, the process often looks like this. The details can change, so treat this as a general guide.

  1. Register your interest on the official courier website or app with your contact details and location.
  2. Choose your vehicle type. This decides which documents you are asked for.
  3. Upload identity documents and complete any photo or selfie verification.
  4. Provide proof of your right to work, such as a passport or a Home Office share code.
  5. Add vehicle and insurance details if you use a motor vehicle.
  6. Complete onboarding. This may include short online training about safety and using the app.
  7. Wait for a decision. The platform reviews your details and lets you know the outcome.

Some applicants are activated quickly. Others may wait, especially in busy areas where many people apply. There is no guaranteed timeline.

Documents you may need

Applicants are typically asked for some of the following:

  • A valid passport or other accepted photo ID
  • Proof of right to work in the UK
  • A full UK driving licence, if you drive or ride a motor vehicle
  • Vehicle details, such as registration and the V5C logbook
  • Insurance that covers food delivery for motor vehicles
  • A UK bank account in your own name

Insurance for Just Eat couriers

If you use a car, moped or motorcycle, you will generally need insurance that covers you while you deliver food for payment. Ordinary policies usually do not include this. The relevant cover is often called hire and reward or food delivery insurance.

Some platforms provide certain types of cover for couriers while they are on a delivery, for example public liability or personal accident cover. This does not normally replace the motor insurance you need by law. Check exactly what is offered in the courier app and read the terms.

Tips for a smoother application

  • Check your name. Use the same full name on your account, ID, bank account and insurance.
  • Use clear photos. Good light, no glare, all corners visible.
  • Check expiry dates. Make sure ID, licence and insurance are in date.
  • Keep your share code ready. Share codes expire, so generate a fresh one if needed.
  • Answer honestly. Give accurate information about your vehicle, address and history.

What JZ Consultant Group will not do

We want to be clear. We will not help anyone use another person's account, rent or share an account, or upload documents that are not their own. These actions break platform rules and may be illegal. They can also lead to accounts being closed permanently.
